A Grandchild of Italy Cracks the Spaghetti Code

An amusing, nostalgic article about tomato sauce from the NY Times:

"I was trying to write down recipes when the old woman grabbed my arm, shaking it hard. Why didn’t I speak any Italian? And even worse, why did I think oregano had any place in tomato sauce?"

I can relate to the author. While I never used oregano in my sauce, it has always been a mystery to me why people put what they do in their tomato sauce(s). Forever the recipe I used was a slight variation of my mother's, which was from her mother - a simple "pomodoro" of olive oil, garlic, onions, basil, salt, black pepper and Italian tomatoes.
